Where art meets the cosmos

Questi ed Altri Spazi

Art × Space · Altamura, 2021

Art and Space meet.

An innovative format that unites the fascination and concreteness of Science with the creativity and emotion of Art.

Questi ed Altri Spazi was born from the wish to share the next steps of space exploration. Looking back, it is clear that the human approach to discovering and using resources has to move further and further from exploitation, and help to improve our life on Earth. Making more and more people aware of this is the only way to explore differently from the past: more respectfully, more morally, more effectively.

The first edition took place in Altamura from 31 August to 10 September 2021. Its thread was Enter the Void, my first solo exhibition: across its days, conferences, live music and audio-visual performances turned to space from the side of science and from the side of art.

“This project wants to offer food for thought from an artistic and a scientific approach alike. Through exhibitions, conferences and music it retraces the path of Pasquale Castellano, artist and space engineering student, who studied and reflected on these themes, eager to give his contribution to the ‘Other Spaces’ the universe has to offer.”
Timeline

Three days

L'Uomo e lo Spazio
Day 1 · Mankind and Space

L'Uomo e lo Spazio

Watching the universe has always drawn artists and scientists, each in their own way. In the last century humanity took enormous steps towards space, with crewed missions and with the satellites and uncrewed craft that explored it, yet its physical experience is still for a chosen few, who carry it with them for the rest of their lives. With Vincenzo Gallo, Apollo programme expert, the science communicator Adrian Fartade, and Franco Malerba, Italy's first astronaut.

Space Technologies
Day 2

Space Technologies

To appreciate what space offers, one has to understand the difficulties met beyond the atmosphere, and the missions and technologies that faced them. Concepts such as solar sails were presented to everyone, together with the companies of the region that take part in the global race to space, for research and for space tourism. With Francesco Giordano, professor and researcher at the University of Bari and board member of the Aerospace Technology District, Andrea Mincolla, engineer at SITAEL, and Les Johnson, NASA scientist and author.

Rebirth
Day 3

Rebirth

The reality we know comes from a random process, an initial asymmetry: planets, celestial bodies and living beings are made of the same matter, which never stops transforming. How far can we know ourselves and what surrounds us, and can we found a society on better principles? A day to rise from the ashes and reshape reality, with the photography exhibition of Michele Masiello, Federico E. Cornacchia and Francesco Colonna (Franco Sugar), live music by Giacomo Denora, and an audio-visual performance by VAEL and Pit Campanella.

Enter the Void

At the heart of the first edition: the paintings of the Surreal Chapter, facing the primordial emptiness from which everything is born.
